Chonburi announces 12 new local cases of Covid –19, recap of Governor's press conference

Chonburi-

Chonburi has announced 12 new cases of local transmission of Covid –19 at a press conference at 12:30 P.M. today (December 29th).

The total number of Chonburi confirmed cases in this new series of infections is now 36.

Of the 36 confirmed cases 12 are in Mueang district, 22 in Banglamung district and two in Sattahip. You can find information on our announcement of yesterday's large number of cases below:

Chonburi announces 22 new local cases of Covid -19, 17 in Banglamung

We also announced timelines that the Chonburi Public Health Office have released here:

UPDATE: TIMELIME Pattaya and Banglamung warns people who visited places in relation to confirmed Covid – 19 cases

Thirty of the cases are directly related to illegal gambling establishments and a large cluster that originally came from the Rayong province, according to Chonburi Governor Phakarathorn Tienchai. Two of the cases relate directly to another seafood market cluster from Samut Sakhon.  One is a close contact of those two cases. Information on the other three cases and their timeline was not immediately given. All the patients are under quarantine/observation and their contacts are being traced and tested.

There were no additional restrictions or closures announced at the press conference for Chonburi business owners and residents. The Governor did state that beaches will not be closed at this time, but people need to socially distance and beach chair vendors need to provide proper Covid-19 measures like temperature checks and hand sanitizer. The Governor said that he feels the province is not in critical condition at this time but preventative measures like masks, hand sanitizer and social distancing need to increase with all residents.

The Governor added that there may be more announcements this evening if needed as more information is released by the health department. At this time, there is no need to lockdown everything however some high-risk venues may need to close and some, like chicken fighting and dancing establishments, have already been closed. At this time there will not be quarantine for people who enter Chonburi, although there may be temperature checkpoints on roads that may also ask ones purpose of entering the province. However, there are not domestic travel restrictions overall at this time.

We posted last night previously announced business orders which can be found here:

We will update our readers as soon as we get more information.

Thailand could see tens of thousands of new COVID-19 cases per day by mid January, if people fail to follow the preventive guidelines issues to combat the spread of the virus.

Speaking at the daily briefing regarding the COVID-19 situation, Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said new cases will rise to four or five digits by the middle of next month if the public fails to cooperate with measures put in place.

"If we do not follow the measures set and if there is no cooperation the number of infected people per day could reach thousands, or tens of thousands, by mid-January 2021, Dr Taweesilp said.

Dr Taweesilp urged people to refrain from socialising in order for the number of new cases to "run flat" rather than spike.

Dr Taweesilp's advice comes just days before the New Year's Eve celebrations, with reports earlier today suggesting that many Thais have decided to stay home rather than travel domestically. However, large numbers of people are still set to travel upcountry before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, governors in provinces with high numbers of  new cases have been ordered to ensure that all COVID-19 preventive measures are being properly implemented.

The news comes as Thailand on Monday announced 144 new COVID-19 cases.

Most of the new infections were discovered in Rayong (56 cases), where  the province has been put under the strictest measures in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

The new wave of cases in Rayong have been linked to an illegal gambling den. Despite claims that no illegal gambling takes place in the province, Rayong police chief, Police Maj Gen Paphatdet Ketphan was transferred to an inactive post on Monday over the matter.

Elsewhere, new cases were reported in Bangkok (19), Nakhon Pathom (18), Chonburi (6), Samut Prakan (5), Nonthaburi (3), Nakhon Nayok (2), Pathum Thani (2), Chiang Mai, Lopburi, Samut Sakhon and Sukhothai (1 each)

Thai hospital banned from offer to sell COVID-19 vaccine

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A private Thai hospital was ordered on Sunday to stop advertising COVID-19 vaccinations for sale in advance on the grounds that no vaccine is yet approved in Thailand.

Vibhavadi Hospital told Reuters its online offer for 1,000 initial reservations for the two-dose Moderna vaccine had been the result of a misunderstanding. With reservations priced at 4,000 baht, the total cost of getting vaccinated would have been 10,000 baht ($330).

As the first governments begin vaccine rollouts around the world, questions have been raised over how the limited supplies are prioritised and whether people will be able to pay to jump the queue.

The Ministry of Health said in a statement that no COVID-19 vaccine had been approved for use in Thailand yet and that advertising one violated hospital regulations.

"The removal of the advertisement was ordered," it said.

Chaisit Kupwiwat, a director at Vibhavadi Hospital, told Reuters: "There was a misunderstanding and so we've stopped the programme... We planned to order the vaccines, but now we've stopped."

The hospital had sought reservations by Jan. 31 for vaccinations later in 2021.

Moderna did not respond immediately to an emailed request for comment on any such sale.

Thailand has signed an advance deal for AstraZeneca's potential COVID-19 vaccine, but has not set rollout plans for any vaccine yet.

Moderna's vaccine this month became the second to get emergency use authorisation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine.

Moderna has said it will deliver approximately 20 million doses to the U.S. government this year and is expected to have between 100 million and 125 million delivered globally in the first quarter of 2021.

In August, Moderna said it was pricing its vaccine at $32 to $37 per dose for smaller deals.

Thailand is a major hub for medical tourism, drawing patients from Asia, the Middle East and beyond.

Covid-19 situation worsens as local infections now spread to 38 provinces with more red zones - Thai Examiner

Covid-19 situation worsens as local infections now spread to 38 provinces with more red zones
Find your ThaiLoveLines - Thai Love in Thailand

Dr Yong Poovorawan, the top virologist with Chululongkorn's Faculty of Medicine, has expressed concern about the high levels of asymptomatic cases being detected and urged more widespread availability of RT-PCR testing to conclusively identify the disease. His ominous prediction of an impending second wave was supported by a similar warning from the Covid-19 Situation Administration Centre where Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin told the public that more severe lockdown measures could well be on the cards without more cooperation from the public.

Thailand could well be teetering on the brink of the second wave of Covid-19 as new local infections have spread to 38 provinces with more being coded red and a warning from top virologist at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine, Dr Yong Poovorawan, that a large number of asymptomatic cases testing positive may mean that the second wave is already underway. The top virus expert called for more widespread and conclusive Covid 19 testing as well as expedited plans to hasten the rollout of a vaccine.

Over the weekend, Dr Yong Poovorawan, the top virologist with the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, warned that we may be witnessing the beginning of the second wave as more local infections are detected in provinces across the country with the overwhelming majority being asymptomatic. He has called on the government to upgrade testing and to have more conclusive RT-PCR testing facilties. He has also suggested an earlier rollout of a nationwide vaccine which officials indicated, only last week, would be delayed until the second half of the year.

Thailand's Covid-19 status has begun to deteriorate rapidly with the news that Rayong in eastern Thailand, which up to Thursday last had been Covid-19 free for 200 days, has jumped to become a red zone province after it reported 27 new cases on Saturday following eight on Friday and one on Thursday evening.

The news was confirmed by Governor Chanchana Lamsaeng with eighteen of the infections being diagnosed in state-run hospitals and nine in private medical facilities in the latest tally.

Severe Rayong outbreak linked to illegal gambling den with a 55-year-old woman identified as the super spreader failing to cooperate with officials

The outbreak in Rayong is said to be linked to an illegal gambling den with the main culprit or 'super spreader' reported by police to be a 55-year-old woman who Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, the top Department of Disease Control official, said has not been truthful while cooperating with authorities fearing that her testimony could lead to the suppression of illegal gambling networks in the province.

On Saturday, Bangkok reported a further eighteen cases while Phetchaburi reported a further seven. In total, the kingdom reported 64 new infections for the day.

Officials are reporting that 90% of the cases are asymptomatic and have only been detected through testing.

Top virologist fears the worst, the beginning of an uncontrollable second wave across Thailand

On Sunday, Dr Yong Poovorawan, one of Thailand's leading experts on the Covid 19 virus and Head of the Centre of Excellence for Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine, warned the government that it needs conclusive RT-PCR testing in all areas with as much volume as possible if it is to have any hope of halting a second wave of coronavirus in the kingdom.

Dr Yong suggested that what we are witnessing may be the early stages of a second wave of the virus. He highlighted the large number of asymptomatic cases meaning people can be spreading the virus while being unaware they are carrying it.

The top doctor urged private hospitals to lower the price charged for testing to assist efforts to isolate people who have the virus in what is a race against time.

He also indicated that the rollout of a vaccine should begin sooner rather than later noting that there were now 6 different alternatives.

Local infections have now spread to 38 provinces

As the spate of local virus infections has now spread to 38 provinces with more red zones, meaning stricter lockdown measures being taken, the Prime Minister, Prayut Chan ocha, has already given the order for a halt to all public gatherings nationwide.

In the meantime, local authorities in orange zones such as Nonthaburi have tightened the regulations for entertainment centres banning all live music, food after 10 pm and insisting on closure at midnight.

However, further measures may be on the cards.

Over the weekend, the spokesman for the Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, warned of the very real prospect now of a nationwide lockdown if the situation spirals out of control and said that the only way to prevent this was overwhelming cooperation from the public.
