CHIANG MAI: A field hospital for Covid-19 patients that was closed on June 9 will be reopened on Tuesday to cope with a surge of new infections.

The province logged 17 new infections on Monday.

The provincial communicable disease committee decided to re-open the facility,  at the 2014 international convention and exhibition centre on Chang Phuak road in Muang district, from Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday, beds and other equipment were re-installed.

Dr Amporn Iamsri, director of the Chiang Mai field hospital, said it would have 250 beds and take patients with mild symptoms for treatment. This would relieve the burden on the major hospitals.

The fire incident happened at Ming Dih Chemical Co on King Kaew 21 Road in Racha Thewa sub-district, Samut Prakarn at 3.20am. The impact of the explosion also damaged at least 70 nearby houses.

Many people were injured when a large-scaled factory producing polystyrene beads caught fire and exploded in Bang Phli district early this morning.

The incident happened at Ming Dih Chemical Co on King Kaew 21 Road in Racha Thewa sub-district, Samut Prakarn, near Bangkok, at 3.20am. The impact also damaged at least 70 nearby houses.



Firefighters of Racha Thewa and nearby areas were deployed to control the blaze. They tried to prevent the fire from reaching a large chemical tank.

At least 15 people were injured in the incident. Rescue workers sent them to hospital.

Officials had yet to estimate the damage and the cause of the explosion.

The local office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation ordered evacuation in the five-kilometer radius of the chemical company for public safety. Official report said the fire didn't affect flights at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport. (TNA)

If anyone has problems with respiratory symptoms and/or fever within 14 days from when they had visited those places, they must go to a hospital, according to the Chonburi Public Health Office.

Please inform the hospital that you visited the same place as a Covid-19 confirmed case, they continued.

The Chonburi Department of Public Health announced 266 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 today, as well as one new death, July 6th.

This makes a total of 10,023 cases of Covid-19 in the current round of infections, with 3,639 still under medical care/supervision, and with a total of 52 recorded deaths in Chonburi since the start of this recent round of infections in early April. One new death was announced this morning, although details were not provided.

Additionally, 6,332 people in total have now been released from medical care and fully recovered since this current wave began. 291 people were released yesterday.

The district-level new cases were as follows today:

Mueang Chonburi 71, Si Racha 82, Banglamung (Pattaya) 36, Panat Nikhom 2, Sattahip 8, Ban Bueang 13, Pan Thong 29, Nong Yai 1, and 24 new cases transferred from other provinces for medical care.

The details on the cases are as follows:

1. Siam Boon Mueang worker camp in Huay Yai, Banglamung, 12 cases

The explosion took place on 5 July 2021 at 3.10 am at a foam factory in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. The explosion could be felt through a wide area kilometers away. Nearby buildings and homes were damaged from the impact with broken windows, doors, and more. Fire fighters, the local rescue team, and related officials rushed in to help injured persons. The flames continue to burn, and the injured numbers continues to rise. Teams continue to fight the fire and so far, the estimated damage is at least 700 million THB. There has been 1 death from the explosion with 62 injured persons and counting.

The factory produces foam and plastic packaging located on the outskirts of Bangkok. The explosion was so strong, the sound and effects were felt by locals far away. A tank containing styrene monomer is burning while officials try their best to control the burn. Thick black smoke can be seen coming from the factory. Helicopters are dumping fire retardant to help control the flames. Styrene monomer is a hazardous chemical in liquid form. It is used to make foam, the factory makes foam plates, packaging, and more. The fumes are toxic and extremely dangerous when inhaled.

As a result, there is now evacuation orders in place for residents within 10 kilometers of the factory. This includes medical personal and patients in hospitals within the evacuation area. Residents must take their health as the main importance considering the toxic smoke and the risk of more explosions. Styrene gas is released when burned. It is a neurotoxin, when inhaled within minutes can immobilize you. Thalernsak Petchsuwan from the Pollution Control Department stated breathing the fumes in can get dizzy and even vomit, there is a risk for cancer in the long run. Those who need to evacuate should do so immediately with their necessities, important paperwork, and pets.

Daily News reported that one rescue worker had died and 20 householders in the area of a plastics factory in Samut Prakan were injured after an explosion and subsequent fire.

 

It occurred at the Minty plastics company in Soi King Kaew 21 during Sunday night/Monday morning. 

 

A video of CCTV showed the moment that windows shattered at a house and still pictures at several properties showed glass fragments all over the place reported Daily News. 

 

 

The media reported that 20 householders in the area - Bang Plee Yai in Samut Prakan province east of the Thai capital Bangkok - had been injured in the blast. 

 

One rescue worker was reportedly killed. 

 

They further reported that last night before midnight the provincial governor Wanchai Khongkasem had visited to declare the fire was now over and that all "valves had been sealed". 

 

 

Firemen continued to damp down. 

 

Yet after midnight in the early hours of this morning in several tweets on Twitter and posts on Facebook, JS 100 said that fires continued to break out and firemen remained at the scene.

 

It appeared that layers of foam had proved insufficient to prevent further fire, said JS 100.

The chairman of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, Air Marshal Dr. Anutra Chittinandana, is asking Thai people to enter a voluntary full lockdown, to protect themselves against COVID-19, in the light of the disturbing number of COVID patients in general hospitals.

In his Facebook post made on Sunday, Dr. Anutra noted that yesterday was the first day, since May 18^th, on which the number of patients in general hospitals (30,145) exceeded the number in field hospitals (29,793).

He said that the number of patients being admitted has been increasing steadily since June 19^th, to almost 60,000 cases now, which is about 10,000 more than the peak in June.

This increases the heavy workload on all hospitals and the number of patients waiting to be admitted to general or field hospitals, he said, adding that more patients may have to look after themselves at home.

Pointing out that the Delta COVID-19 variant is becoming dominant globally, he said everyone in Thailand could help to contain the contagion with a full voluntary lockdown.

"If it is not necessary, do not go out anywhere. Do not trust anyone and always bear in mind that anyone can be infected.  Everywhere we go may have the COVID-19 virus on contact points," said Dr. Anutra, as he asked everyone to wear face masks properly and regularly wash their hands.

"Do not lower your guard and, if you get the chance, get vaccinated," he added.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O'Cha today, July 5th, was sent to self-isolation quarantine after contacting the chairman of the Surin Chamber of Commerce who recently tested positive for Covid-19 while attending the "Phuket Sandbox" opening ceremony last Thursday, July 1st.

The Prime Minister was found in a selfie photo standing close to Chairman Veerasak Pisanuwong during his visit to the Phuket Sandbox reopening campaign in the southern island province.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri revealed that the Prime Minister, who has already been fully vaccinated, has now entered a quarantine, which will reportedly be in self-isolation at his home while monitored by health officials. He would continue to perform his duty and monitor the overall situation from his private quarantine areas.

Additionally, his Covid-19 SWAB test was conducted this morning and proved negative of the virus. He continued to perform duties as usual before leaving the Government House at 12:10 PM and starting his work from home.
