Reservation for international flights to main airports in Thailand has jumped more than 20% this month as the country is entering the high season for tourism.

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) said on Thursday night that confirmed slots for airlines from overseas destinations this month had accounted for 9,483 flights so far this month, a 24% rise from November.

The airport-operating agency also said a total of 17,132 flights would land at its airports in the last two months of this year, most of them in December.

The increasing number of flights reflected more air travel to Thailand during the peak season of the tourism sector, AoT said. More flights will likely be added this month, said the state-owned airport operator.

Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai and Phuket are its facilities serving international travellers since the government reopened the country on Nov 1.

A total of 186,938 travellers entered the country since the reopening day, mainly through Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket, according to Department of Disease Control data to Wednesday.

Americans and Germans were top international visitors arriving in the kingdom.

Two Singapore residents may have caught the Omicron variant even after receiving Covid-19 booster shots, in cases which may shed light on the protection offered by a third dose of vaccine.

A 24-year-old female airport passenger-service worker has returned a preliminary positive test to Omicron, in what would be the city-state's first local case of the variant, the health ministry said in a statement late Thursday.

The second person is considered an imported case after returning from Germany via the vaccinated travel lane on Dec 6. Both had received a third dose of vaccines, the ministry said.

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE earlier this week said initial lab studies show a third dose of their Covid-19 vaccine may be needed to neutralise the Omicron variant.

Company researchers observed a 25-fold reduction in neutralising antibodies that fight the variant, compared with the original strain of the virus, in people who got just two shots. However, boosting with an additional shot of the vaccine restored protection to a level similar to the initial two-dose regimen.

"Given its high transmissibility and spread to many parts of the world, we should expect to find more Omicron cases at our borders and also within our community," Singapore's health ministry said.

Both people are recovering in isolation at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, and all close contacts will be placed in 10-day quarantine at designated facilities, the ministry said.

The airport worker had been tested as part of weekly testing for frontline border workers. She was asymptomatic when detected through the testing, according to the statement.

In the second case, the 46-year-old had tested negative with a PCR test on arrival. However, she developed a runny nose the next day and sought medical treatment the day after that, when she tested positive.

Singapore has seen a sharp drop in community cases over the past month, along with a significant easing in hospital loads.

The city-state has one of the world's best vaccination rates, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Eighty-seven of the total population is fully vaccinated, while 96% of those eligible are fully inoculated, most with Pfizer or Moderna.

Some 29% have also received booster jabs. Government officials have said jabs for those age 5-11 will be offered soon.

Fourth Omicron case emerges in Thailand

THE PUBLIC Health Ministry said this afternoon (Dec. 9) that one more Omicron case has emerged in the country with this being a Thai man returning from Democratic Republic of the Congo, Amarin TV said.

He is the fourth case of the new variant in this country with the ministry yesterday confirming that two Thai women who returned from Nigeria on Nov. 24 too were infected as was an American man who travelled to Thailand from Spain a few days earlier similarly infected.

Dr. Supakit Sirilak, head of the Medical Sciences Department, said the 41-year-old Thai man is a UN official and has received two Astra Zeneca jabs. Upon arriving he went through the Test & Go procedure with his Covid test showing a mutation location consistent with Omicron's location.  This indicates a high chance of being infected with the new strain.

His samples have been sent for whole genome sequencing (WGS) test and the result confirming whether or not it is Omicron will be out in a day or two.

Investigation into risk groups is currently underway.

The ministry has said early this morning that there were 4,203 Covid cases and 49 deaths over the past 24 hours taking the cumulative confirmed total since April to 2,127,724 and from the onset of the pandemic 2,156,587, Sanook.com said.

Today's 49 fatalities raised the death toll to 21,084.

Another 7,939 patients were cured taking total recoveries since April to 2,047,662 with 60,415 patients still undergoing treatment.
