4th jab for residents of Bangkok, Phuket and 8 other tourism pilot provinces

Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said the plan has now been extended to cover more people. Initially, only medics and people at high risk were considered for a fourth jab.

"People who received their third jab more than three months ago can get their fourth jab in February," he said.

Opas said a fourth AstraZeneca jab is recommended for those whose first two jabs were Sinovac and third AstraZeneca, while a Pfizer booster is recommended for those who received two AstraZeneca jabs and a Pfizer booster.

He added that provincial Communicable Disease Committees are responsible for planning vaccine management, setting up vaccination stations and publicising the information.

"We urge residents to follow the information provided by their local Communicable Disease Committee," he added.

The 10 tourism pilot provinces include Phuket, Surat Thani, Krabi, Phang Nga, Bangkok, Chonburi, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Kanchanaburi and Pathum Thani.

The ministry has allocated 11.6 million doses – 8 million AstraZeneca and 3.6 million Pfizer – for the campaign and they will be divided as follows:

• 0.5 million each of AstraZeneca and Pfizer doses for those aged 18 and above who have never received a Covid-19 jab.

• 0.1 million Pfizer doses (purple cap) for those aged 12 to 17 years who have never received a Covid-19 jab.

• 1 million Pfizer doses (orange cap) for children aged 5-11.

• 6 million AstraZeneca and 2 million Pfizer doses as a booster for fully vaccinated people.

• 0.5 million AstraZeneca doses as a booster for those who were infected with Covid-19.

• 1 million AstraZeneca doses in reserve to tackle a possible outbreak.

Chon Buri: Hospitality and tourism business operators in Pattaya city have welcomed the government's decision to include the city, part of Bang Lamung district, and other districts of the coastal province in the tourism sandbox scheme.

This means Pattaya can expect to begin welcoming international tourists under the tourism promotion scheme as well as the Covid-19 Test & Go programme which is due to resume next month.

Chon Buri is also among eight selected provinces piloting a tourism reopening plan where alcohol beverages can be served until 11pm, compared to 9pm under the current curbs, says the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The other seven provinces in this so-called Blue Zone, in which restaurants meeting Safety and Health Administration (SHA) Plus standards will be allowed to serve alcohol to their customers, are Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Krabi, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Phangnga and Phuket.

Responding to the CCSA's decision to allow of Pattaya and Chon Buri to ease Covid-19 restrictions for the sake of tourism, Pattaya City mayor Sonthaya Khunpluem said both are important tourist destinations and local businesses would strictly adhere to the any CCSA guidance regarding necessary Covid-19 control measures.

Phisit Saekhu, president of the association of hoteliers in the eastern provinces, welcomed the news. Before the recent suspension of the Thailand Pass registration system for international tourists, about 500 tourists arrived in Pattaya each day. During the suspension, only 100 people visited per day, he said.

When the Test & Go programme was suspended earlier this month due to a surge in number of new Covid-19 infections, business operators in Pattaya were badly hit, he said.

He said he would like the government to consider relaxing more restrictions when the situation improves. The new requirement for tourists to undergo an RT-PCR Covid-19 test twice, first upon their arrival and the second test on the fifth day of their stay, should be reduced to just the initial test, or perhaps have the second screening replaced by a rapid antigen test instead, he said.

Damrongkiat Phinitkan, secretary of Pattaya City's association for entertainment and tourism, meanwhile, urged the government to allow live performances at nightspots.

BMA follows CCSA; Bangkok entertainment venues remain closed

It will likely come as no shock to anyone, but the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared today that they will follow the rules of the CCSA and extend the closure of entertainment venues indefinitely. The decision was announced today that bars, pubs, karaoke, nightclubs, and other nightlife and entertainment venues will not be reopening in Bangkok as with the rest of Thailand (well, legally anyway).

In the announcement, the BMA said that they will keep their rules in line with the CCSA in enforcing the closure of entertainment venues and that there is no set end date for the indefinite closure. They echoed the concerns of the CCSA that the Omicron variant that has given Thailand a resurgence of Covid-19 in the last month due to its high transmissibility will be even more easily spread if nightlife venues, where people frequently relax their vigilance in following safety rules, are allowed to reopen.

The restaurant loophole is still in full swing though, as any entertainment venue that is able to meet the required standards can open up a restaurant and serve alcohol, now until 11 pm. Venues must meet either the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' SHA+ certification or the Ministry of Public Health's Thai Stop COVID 2 Plus standard. Any nightlife or entertainment venue that meets these standards can then reopen as a so-called restaurant and host customers, serving alcohol until 11 pm.

But for now, actual nightclubs and bars or people can drink and party all night, remain just a distant memory of those magical days before Covid-19. The rarely enforced punishment for violators of the bar closure laws is up to one year in prison. Fines, though rarely given, have been raised to be from between 20,000 to 100,000 baht once a venue is convicted of the violation.
