Thailand's travel safety ranked eighth globally and first in ASEAN by American tourist's votes

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was pleased after Thailand's travel safety was ranked 8th globally and 1st in ASEAN by a recent American survey, saying this would help the wider re-opening of the country on May 1st.

Yesterday, April 30th, Mrs. Traisulee Traisornkul, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office revealed that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed great satisfaction and gratitude after Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection announced the State of Travel Insurance Report, which showed that Thailand's travel safety was ranked eighth internationally by American tourists and third in Asia after Japan and South Korea, while Millennial tourists ranked Thailand as the second safest destination. Thailand, on the other hand, was ranked first in ASEAN by American tourists.

Mrs. Traisulee stated that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has continually attempted to standardize travel safety in all aspects such as road safety, water safety, and tourist property protection to establish a good image for the country.

Mrs. Traisulee added that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha firmly believed that Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection's report would have a positive impact on Thai tourism in the overall aspect, given that Thailand was dropping Test and Go, which required Covid-19 testing on arrival and the risk of a quarantine, for a wider reopening on May 1st. He thanked all stakeholders and Thai citizens for making Thailand a safe, welcoming, and inviting destination for tourists all over the world.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is looking forward to drawing at least 1 million tourists per month during the high season in the final quarter thanks to a less cumbersome entry process.

The agency reported a spike on Friday in Thailand Pass registrations thanks to the new entry rules enacted on April 1.

"Even though there are challenging factors such as low travel confidence, a poor economy, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a labour shortage in the tourism sector and heated competition from other destinations, our goal of 7-10 million arrivals remains within sight," said TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn.

As of April 25, Thailand had welcomed 713,183 international arrivals this year.

The highest tally was 215,490 arrivals in April, attributed to the cancellation of the 72-hour pre-travel RT-PCR test from April 1. The number of tourists for the whole month of April is expected to reach 300,000.

Mr Yuthasak said the market should gather pace during the high season, with at least 1 million foreign tourists per month from October.

Following the implementation of the new registration on Friday for the Thailand Pass system that eliminates Covid-19 tests, there were 40,000-50,000 registrants during the first 12 hours, said the agency.

The promising response indicates strong tourism demand from overseas visitors, with new easing of entry rules slated for May 1.

He said the TAT should push Thai tourism by promoting both short-haul and long-haul markets, particularly countries with fewer travel conditions allowing tourists to travel freely.

For the long-haul market, the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, the US, Canada, Latin America and European countries, are among the target markets.

The TAT plans to participate in international trade shows such as the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) North America from Sept 19 to 22 in Mexico. It expects to invite tourism operators to join roadshows such as Amazing New Chapters Roadshow to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on May 15 to 17.

The short-haul market includes India as a target country, as there is potential with 200 groups of wedding ceremonies already confirmed this year, said the TAT. Other promising markets include Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea, said Mr Yuthasak.

Joint promotions with partners are scheduled throughout this year for quality segments, led by health and wellness, golf, leisure, luxury and weddings.

On Friday, the TAT hosted a meeting with tourism operators to discuss marketing plans for the international market. He said operators suggested focusing on emerging markets in South Asia such as Bangladesh and Pakistan.

2,737 positive ATK (rapid antigen) tests were reported but all require a second confirmed PCR test before being counted as official cases. The ATK positive tests are just "possible" cases until confirmed by PCR. TPN notes, however, that second confirmed tests are no longer mandatory except for high-risk groups.

Ten new deaths

The Chonburi Department of Public Health announced 467 new and confirmedcases of Covid-19 today with ten new deaths, on April 29th, 2022.

This makes a total of 104,162 cases (PCR) and 292,321 cases (ATK) of Covid-19 in the current round of infections, with 5,397 (PCR) and 35,948 (ATK) people still under medical care/supervision, and with a total of 271 recorded deaths in Chonburi since the start of this recent round of infections at the beginning of this year, January 2022.

Additionally, 680 (PCR) and 4,362 (ATK) people were also released and recovered yesterday in Chonburi. 98,494 (PCR) and 256,373 (ATK) people in total have now been released from medical care and recovered in Chonburi since this current wave of Covid-19 began at the beginning of this year, January 2022.

The ten new deaths were aged 27, 39, 42, 46, 52, 62, 70, 71, 82, and 88 with severe personal health problems and pre-existing conditions. Four of them were not vaccinated.

In total, 2,06,523 people in Pattaya and Chonburi have received their first dose of a Covid -19 vaccine which is 88.73 percent of the total Chonburi population. Of those, 308,778 have received their first dose and are what the Thai government calls 608 groups (elders, have chronic health problems, and pregnant) which is 83.47 percent of those in these risk groups in Chonburi.

997,060 people have received their triple dose which is 42.81 percent of the total Chonburi population. Of those, 179,995 are 608 groups which are 48.66 percent of those in these risk groups in Chonburi.

The district-level new cases were as follows today:

Mueang Chonburi 100, Sri Racha 139, Banglamung (Pattaya) 86, Panat Nikhom 5, Sattahip 49, Ban Bueng 10, Phan Thong 31, ฺBor Thong 13, Ko Chan 5, Nong Yai 2, and 27 people transferred from other provinces for medical care.

Boosters less effective against more prevalent BA.2 subvariant: Dr Yong. The Nation

Booster shots provide 1.7 times less immunity against the Omicron BA.2 subvariant compared to the BA.1 subvariant, top virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan said on Friday.

In a Facebook post, Dr Yong said a recently conducted study shows that nearly all current Covid-19 patients in Thailand had been infected by the BA.2 subvariant. The study, "Omicron BA.1, BA.2 and Covid-19 booster vaccination", was published on Wednesday in the peer-reviewed Journal of Infectious Diseases.
