The latest government recommendation is that the elderly should avoid alcohol palaces.

The decision of the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration to reopen full-blown nightlife in tourist provinces from June 1 has caused considerable mirth in Thailand's best-known entertainment city. Amongst the suggested anti-Covid safeguards is that people aged 60 and above should keep out of bars, gogo clubs and karaokes in the interests of themselves and of public health.

The news was greeted with some skepticism in the Tree Tops bar complex. "Most foreigners here are potential ancient history," said Frank Lambert, a 67 year-old Brit as he devoured a tasty plateful at Sharples fish and chips cafe. At Heaven Massages on Second Road, Miss Wong pointed out that Pattaya is the city with more bald-headed motor bike drivers than anywhere on earth.

Further recommendations from the CCSA are that face masks are worn during close encounters between customers and staff, a recent negative Covid test on entering premises and daily screening/regular testing of all employees. A security officer at Stones disco on Walking Street confirmed that ATK-tests were available for all, adding that visits by police were mostly confined to enforcing closing time which remains at midnight next month.

In allied developments, the Ministry of Health has said that abolishing the pre-registration Thailand Pass bureaucracy for aliens could happen in July, but that depends on the virus prevalence nationwide during the next 30 days. A positive decision then would mean that foreign tourists and expats would perhaps need only their passport to board a plane as in pre-Covid days. They would enter their vaccination details on the TM6 entry card handed out on the airplane to all arrivals.

However, a spokesman refused to confirm that the US$10,000 insurance bond would also be dropped if Thailand Pass was cancelled, saying a decision had not been made. The insurance requirement elsewhere in the region is a mixed bag. Cambodia and Laos do not require any medical cover for entry, but warn foreigners they are responsible for their own health costs. The Philippines does impose a US$35,000 bond on most arriving foreigners which can prove a problem for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

The Ministry of Public Health has given a loose time frame for when it will decide upon dropping the Thailand Pass for foreigners.

To make its decision, the ministry needs more solid information about infected cases coming from foreign entry to reach a conclusion, Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday at an event organised by Chulalongkorn Alumni Associations and their partners.

"It's possible that we will cancel the registration requirement of Thailand Pass for foreigners. We need one more month then we will have a clear answer," he said.

Mr Anutin, however, said the country is now relaxing many regulations used in its bid to manage Covid-19 infections due to the improving situation regarding daily infections.

The minister gave examples of the latest easing measure with the opening of pubs, bars and karaoke venues in provinces labelled blue and green zones to boost tourism next month.

He expressed confidence there would be solid cooperation from related business operators in following the ministry's health safety advice.

"We have seen the results of our control measures including having a high percentage of the population receive two doses of Covid-19 vaccines," he said. "That is the reason why we started to relax some regulations."

Mr Anutin praised the country's ability to provide people with access to medical treatment and medicines. He added that telemedicine is another important step the ministry is going to take to offer medical treatment to all Thai people.

Prominent Thai doctor asks public not to panic over Monkeypox in Thailand

Bangkok –

Prominent Thai doctor Yong Poovorawan asked the public to monitor the spreading situation of "monkeypox" abroad closely but not to panic over the disease as no case had ever been found in Thailand since 1970.

The doctor stated on his Facebook account today, May 20th, that monkeypox is not a new disease. It is similar to chickenpox but the severity and the transmissibility of the monkeypox are much less.

Monkeypox's human-to-human transmission is possible, but it requires very close contact, such as touching pustules or secretions, sharing clothes, sleeping in the same bed, and raising animals that are carriers of this disease.

He said: "In the past, there had not been a Monkeypox pandemic, only found in certain groups in Africa and in case-by-case in Europe and America. And, there had been reported cases in Singapore. This time in England, it may be sexually transmitted but the investigation is ongoing, still waiting for confirmation"

"The virus is categorized in the same group as smallpox. Therefore, it is believed that the smallpox vaccine is likely to prevent this disease. However, this must be studied and confirmed in further steps. There's nothing to panic about. The infection requires very close contact."

"However, surveillance is essential, especially among those traveling from West Africa and Central Africa and those importing animals into the Kingdom." Dr. Yong concluded.
