Over 2,000 of 3,955 Covid cases today in Bangkok

WHILE the daily Covid count continued to dip with today's (May 31) tally being 3,955 cases and 21 deaths, Bangkok remains the hardest hit with 2,167 cases being in the capital, Amarin TV said.

Today's cases raised the nationwide cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 4,450,457 and since the beginning of this year 2,227,022.

An additional 3,345 people tested positive via antigen kit with confirmation via RC-PCR still awaited and this total not added to the daily tally.

Another 6,607 patients were cured taking total recoveries since the start of the pandemic to 4,380,577 and since the beginning of the year 2,212,083 while 39,861 patients are still undergoing treatment.

Today's 21 fatalities raised the death toll since the onset of the pandemic to 30,019 and from the beginning of the year 8,321.

Bangkok remained at the top of 10 worst-hit provinces today, with the addition of 2,167 cases raising the capital's total to 358,123 cases. Details as follows: 

1) Bangkok 2,167 cases, adding up to 358,123;

2) Buriram 93 cases, totalling 48,211;

3) Samut Prakan 66 cases, totalling 98,721;

4) Nakhon Phanom 65 cases, altogether 13,215;

5) Khon Kaen 61 cases, altogether 53,823;

6) Chonburi 58 cases, adding up to 109,928;

7) Sakon Nakhon 58 cases, totalling 20,482;

8) Surin 55 cases, totalling 31,817;

9) Samut Sakhon 54 cases, altogether 56,986;

10) Udon Thani 54 cases, altogether 28,551.

Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virologist with Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine, said in a Facebook post that the virus has so far infected some 500 people in Europe and the US. Most or 98 per cent of the patients are men in the 20 to 50 age range.

He cited five reasons that made it difficult to control the spread.

Firstly, monkeypox symptoms are not as severe as those of smallpox and there have been no deaths so far. However, he said, because the symptoms are so mild, some patients end up not getting diagnosed.

Secondly, the outbreak of blisters is not large and 30 per cent of blisters are usually in the genital area. When patients have few blisters and their symptoms are not severe, they do not visit the doctor, Yong pointed out.

Thirdly, the virus can spread during intercourse when partners are in intimate contact.

Fourthly, there is no evidence that the virus jumped from animals to humans or that the virus came from Africa. The latest outbreak was spread among humans.

Fifth, if the virus spreads from humans to pets, especially rodents, rabbits and squirrels, they will become carriers as they will have very mild symptoms. Once pets become carriers, the virus will become endemic and become tougher to contain.

The post said monkeypox is already endemic in some African countries and may soon become endemic in Europe as well.

The Public Health Ministry is contemplating lowering its Covid-19 alert to level to two this week as new coronavirus cases continue to fall.

Dr. Chakkarat Pitayawonganon, director of the epidemiology division at the Department of Disease Control, said that as the local and international Covid-19 situations were improving, officials and academics would consider if the alert could be lowered from Level 3 to Level 2 nationwide, or at least in some provinces.

If the alert level is relaxed, high alerts will remain only with elderly people, those with underlying illnesses, pregnant women, inadequately vaccinated people and those visiting poorly ventilated and crowded venues, he said.

Chakkarat also said that from June 1, antigen tests would be necessary only for symptomatic people and those who were close to elderly people, people with underlying illnesses, pregnant women and young children who had not been fully vaccinated. Employers would not have to conduct antigen tests on all workers.

The ministry also will stop reporting positive antigen-test results as part of its daily case numbers.

However, owners of entertainment venues that fully reopen on June 1 must conduct antigen tests on their employees, get their workers fully vaccinated and comply with Covid-Free Setting measures, he said.
