Motorists who have modified their headlights or taillights may now face fines for up to 50,000 baht, the Department of Land Transport announced yesterday, November 23.
Jantira Buruspat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, said that the regulation is being officially mentioned again and enforced after the department received several complaints of people's visibility being affected by headlights and taillights that have been modified to be too bright, flashing, or in different colors other than those specified by law, such as blue.
The deputy director-general stated: "The customization of vehicle headlights or taillights in private cars and taxi-meters is against the Vehicle Act B.E 2522, facing a maximum penalty of 2,000 baht."
"Light modification in public buses and large trucks also violates the Land Transport Act B.E. 2522 for adding objects to vehicles that can harm other people's physical or mental health, which stipulates a maximum penalty of 50,000 baht."
The Department of Land Transport also asked owners of vehicles to be fully aware of the importance of road safety and should ensure the authenticity of their vehicles is in line with the manufacturer's standards.
Apart from the hefty fines, owners who fail to meet requirements will also be told to rectify their equipment before their license is renewed or vehicle inspected, according to The deputy director-general.
"We are also cooperating with police nationwide to randomly inspect vehicles at selected checkpoints. Officials can immediately take charges against the drivers if their vehicles are found with modified headlights or taillights." Jantira stated.
