8 Omicron cases confirmed in Thailand

The Public Health Ministry said on Monday that there are eight Omicron cases in Thailand, with three samples awaiting confirmation.

Dr Suppakit Sirilak, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, said the new infections had been brought into the country from overseas.

He also said that no infections from hybrid variants have been detected in Thailand so far. Dr Suppakit added that the spread of the Delta variant also appears to have slowed down in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the eight confirmed Omicron cases between December 1 and 11 are:

• American man, 35, tests positive under Test & Go scheme upon arrival in Bangkok from Spain.

• Thai woman, 46, tests positive under Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) after landing in Bangkok from Nigeria.

• Thai woman, 36, tests positive under ASQ after arriving in Bangkok from Nigeria.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration will extend quarantine for visitors arriving from overseas through sandbox and quarantine schemes from five to seven days, from this Thursday.

CCSA spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin said Monday's decision was in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and increase in infections in some countries.

Fully vaccinated visitors from countries included in the Test and Go scheme, who must stay only one night in a hotel, will undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival and then be required to antigen test themselves.

Entry was still prohibited to people coming from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, except for Thais and diplomats, he said.

Third vaccine rollout needed to deal with Omicron, advises expert virologist

Comparing the battle against Covid-19 to a long marathon, Dr Yong said people should be given inactivated vaccines like Sinopharm or Sinovac for their first two jabs as they have few side effects.

However, he said, all three jabs of a viral-vector vaccine like AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson is not suitable because recipients' immunity drops over a short period.

He added that though mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna provide high immunity, they also have high side effects.

"Swollen lymph nodes were found in some people who received an mRNA vaccine as their third jab, while heart muscle inflammation was found in some whose second shot was an mRNA vaccine," he said.

Dr Yong said boosters can be provided in the following combinations:

• Two jabs of inactivated vaccine: The third jab can be a viral-vector or mRNA vaccine and delivered one month after the second jab. Both viral-vector and mRNA vaccines can be delivered as fourth shots to deal with new Covid-19 variants.

• Inactivated and viral-vector cocktail: A booster of a viral-vector or mRNA vaccine can be administered three months after the second jab. If the third jab is a viral-vector vaccine, then the fourth jab should be an mRNA one.

• Two viral-vector jabs: The third jab should be an mRNA vaccine administered three to six months after the second jab. If people prefer a viral-vector booster, then the interval must be longer than six months to ensure high immunity.

• Two mRNA jabs: The third jab can be an mRNA vaccine depending on the Covid-19 situation

Thai Covid Center announces New Year’s Eve alcohol allowances and new province rezoning, Chonburi now joins the Blue Zones. Thai Covid Center announces New Year's Eve alcohol allowances and new province rezoning, Chonburi now joins the Blue Zones

National –

The Thai Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has approved serving and drinking alcoholic beverages in all provinces nationwide on the New Year's Eve until 1:00 AM. of the following day, CCSA spokesperson Thaweesilp Visanuyothin announced today, December 13th.

The CCSA also reported that no provinces are categorized any longer in the dark-red and red zones provinces. Therefore, 39 provinces are in the orange zone, 30 in the yellow zone, and eight in the blue zone. TPN media notes that these color-coding scales, for those who are not familiar, dictate the rules and restrictions in each province that are in place to limit the spread of Covid-19.

All areas of Chonburi will also join another 7 pilot provinces, like Phuket or Krabi, in the BLUE Zone (Business, Leisure, Ultimate Experience) which are essentially tourism zones. This means that the province is ready to welcome vaccinated tourists/arrivals from eligible countries under governmental reopening schemes. Restaurants under SHA+ standards will be allowed to serve alcohol during their business hours under the requirements and restrictions of the Chonburi Communicable Disease Committee. This does not mean, however, that bars, entertainment venues, nightclubs, pubs, etc. can legally open as they are still technically closed nationwide by order of the CCSA until at least mid-January when they are planned to be re-evaluated. TPN media notes, however, that in many areas bars have become "restaurants" with varying degrees of certification or licensing to attempt to open in the interim, which has also led to varying degrees of enforcement.

From December 16th onwards, alcohol drinking at qualified restaurants will continue to be prohibited in 39 provinces in the orange zones under the new announcement. The other provinces in the yellow and blue zones are allowed to do so but must follow the guidelines of their provincial orders.

However, during holiday seasons, restaurants with proper ventilation nationwide, despite their color zoning, are allowed to serve alcohol to customers between December 31st, 2021, to 1:00 AM. of January 1st, 2022. All eateries stated must strictly abide by the Covid Free Settings requirements during their operations.

All of the changes announced above will be put into effect this Thursday, December 16th.
