A Pattaya city councilman believes that the city could again become a tourist "sandbox" if daily coronavirus cases can be reduced.

Thanet Supornsahatrangsi, who also heads the Chonburi Tourism Industry Council, dismissed the fact that Pattaya is not an island and that tourists required to stay in Pattaya's sandbox for a week are impossible to control.



The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration last month suspended the Test & Go tourist-entry scheme and reduced the number of sandboxes to one: Phuket. On Jan. 11, Surat Thani Province islands Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao were added, along with Phangna and Krabi.

Like Phuket, access to those southern Thailand regions are easy to control. Tourists who arrive there cannot leave without being noticed.



That's not true for Pattaya, which has twice been shown as tourists who left their quarantine hotels elsewhere early, ended up in the city.

But Thanet said he believes the CCSA will agree to make Banglamung and Sattahip districts in Chonburi as well as Koh Sichang, Bang Saray and Siracha sandboxes again, once cases drop substantially.

Chonburi on Tuesday reported 583 more cases, of which 220 were in Banglamung, which includes Pattaya.

The biggest challenge is that Pattaya is not an island and tourists required to stay in Pattaya's sandbox for a week would be impossible to control.

As for keeping sandboxers in the sandbox, Thanet said he has faith in the mobile phone battery-killing Mor Chana tracking app, which records a tourist's location. Sandbox tourists are required to install it and keep it active during their stay.

Thanet claimed that if a sandboxer left the area, the app would alert authorities.

Technical experts say that it doesn't work that way.

Mor Chana collects, tracks and disseminates only basic information, such as infection data entered by the user, probability and risk of Covid-19 in certain areas, and observations of the outbreak situation from data provided en masse.

No alerts are sent to the government, although authorities could use the use GPS to track the number registered with Mor Chana.

The Chonburi Department of Public Health announced 873 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 today with no new deaths, January 12th, 2022.

This makes a total of 8,212 cases of Covid-19 in the current round of infections, with 7,482 people still under medical care/supervision, and with a total of 4 recorded deaths in Chonburi since the start of this recent round of infections in the beginning of this year January, 2022.

Additionally, 439 people were also released and recovered yesterday in Chonburi. 726 people in total have now been released from medical care and recovered in Chonburi since this current wave of Covid-19 began in the beginning of this year January, 2022.

Three people were listed as being in serious condition in Chonburi currently, either on a ventilator or pneumonia. One of them was not vaccinated. According to the Chonburi Department of Public Health, the vast majority of recent cases are mild or asymptomatic.

In total, 1,923,116 people in Pattaya and Chonburi have received their first dose of a Covid -19 vaccine which is 82.57 percent of the total Chonburi population. Of those, 299,369 have received their first dose and are what the Thai government calls 608 groups (elders, have chronic health problems, and pregnant) which is 80.92 percent of those in these risk groups in Chonburi.

The district-level new cases were as follows today:

Mueang Chonburi 88, Si Racha 279, Banglamung (Pattaya) 400, Panat Nikhom 16, Sattahip 32 (in Navy area 6), Ban Bueng 10, Phan Thong 15, Bor Thong 1, Ko Chan 3, and 29 people transferred from other provinces for medical care.

The details on the cases are as follows:

  1. Work and stayed in Rayong, transferred from other provinces for medical care, 28 cases
  2. Active case finding at restaurants that sell alcohol in Pattaya and Banglamung, 7 cases

  6. Back from other provinces 17 cases

The National Vaccine Institute is inviting the public who have already gotten their second COVID-19 dose at least three months ago to get a booster dose to protect themselves from the disease. 

According to the studies of COVID-19 vaccination across the world, every type of COVID-19 vaccine can reduce the rate of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from the disease. 

None of the COVID-19 vaccines is 100% effective at protecting people from getting infected with the virus because, after we get a vaccination, the immunity in our body will naturally decrease, though slowly. It is necessary for the public to get a booster dose, especially during the spread of the mutant variants of the virus. 

The institute is advising that, besides getting a vaccination, the public should also follow the normal prevention measures by wearing masks, washing hands, and keeping a proper distance from others to help control the spread of the virus and reduce the chance of the virus mutation.

There is NO lockdown of Banglamung/Pattaya or ban for people coming or going. There is NO requirement of a rapid test to enter or leave the district (Although it DOES remain a requirement for  entry to "restaurants" that sell alcohol). Public transportation is NOT being shut down. None of these matters are being considered and Chonburi PR reminded the public nearly all cases of Omicron are asymptomatic or mild and the situation is well under control. This fake news has been making the rounds on Thai social media groups.

COPENHAGEN: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday warned against treating Covid-19 as an endemic illness-like flu, rather than as a pandemic, saying the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant has not yet stabilised.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday it may be time to change how it tracks Covid-19's evolution to instead use a method similar to how it follows the flu, because its lethality has fallen. That would imply treating the virus as an "endemic illness", rather than a pandemic.

"We still have a huge amount of uncertainty and a virus that is evolving quite quickly, imposing new challenges. We are certainly not at the point where we are able to call it endemic," WHO's senior emergency officer for Europe, Catherine Smallwood, told a press briefing.

Chonburi health officials inspected bars/restaurants on Soi Buakhao this week, the epicenter of Pattaya's new coronavirus outbreak.

The province on Monday reported 767 new Covid-19 cases, 390 of which were in Banglamung District, which includes Pattaya.

Chonburi Public Health Director Apirat Katanyutanon said all the bars/restaurants on the central Pattaya street and elsewhere must administer Covid-19 antigen tests to customers daily. Home tests are no longer allowed.

Apirat said customers were faking tests, using photos of old results or straight up faking photos. So, if someone wants a beer in a Pattaya restaurant, they have to take a test first.

Apirat acknowledged that the demand for antigen test kits has resulted in shortsupplies and high prices. He said the province is working to address both problems.
