Thailand Time Machine: A look back at this same week last year in top Thai news: Hurry up and open the country, say business and tourism owners…but a year later, still not fully open

The following is a weekly feature article looking at this same time period LAST year in Pattaya and Thailand news.

Pattaya Thailand - 26 July 2019 Beautiful landscape and cityscape of pattaya city in Thailand

Thailand-

This weekly feature takes a look back at news from the same period last year (and sometimes different time windows, such as six months or three months) to see how things have changed, following up on the progression of stories, as well as look at potentially broken promises or things that didn't take place as promised in Pattaya and Thailand.

As we publish dozens of stories a week this is a quick way for people to take a look at what the biggest stories were a year ago, as chosen by our editorial team, and how they impact us today and relate to current news. They are in no particular order of importance, however, are roughly in order of publication.

This week, we cover the fourth week of March 2021, from Sunday, March 21st, 2021, to Saturday, March 27th, 2021.

Let's go!

1. Dozens injured and arrested at Bangkok protests

Last year spirited protests continued in Bangkok, sparked by different groups and some with competing interests. This was one of the more violent and intense ones, although most had been peaceful prior.

32 people arrested, at least 32 others injured during hours-long intense confrontation at pro-democracy protests in Bangkok last night

  2.  Complaints rise about homeless in Pattaya as debate swirls around how to deal with the situation

A tragic side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic for the past two years. Pattaya officials did not make it better by rounding up the homeless and removing them from visible tourist areas later in the week.

  3.  Minister of Tourism visits Pattaya to discuss "Sandbox" program

Of course, ultimately, Pattaya was not the first choice, Phuket was, and another round of Covid-19 cases starting in April ground everything to a halt once again.

Minister of Tourism visits Pattaya today to discuss "Sandbox" policy to welcome foreign tourists to stay in Pattaya without quarantine

  4.  Pattaya holds a kite festival instead of Songkran water fights

This year, the city is waiting for a final decision from relevant authorities on if water could be allowed to be used as an exception for play in Pattaya. That may come today, March 28th. If not, however, this year will be dry for the third year in a row.

  5.  Hurry up opening the country fully to tourism, says prominent tourism and business associations

A year later, the country is STILL not fully opened and now behind many other countries around the world that have fewer restrictions and rules and paperwork and testing to enter. Thailand is cautiously aiming for June or July to "fully" open.

Thailand's eight prominent tourism associations urge government to accelerate country opening and vaccine allocation in tourism businesses

That is it for this week! Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other!

Hej,
Du som inte besökt Bangsaen under vintern eller missat detta så har det byggts upp
en större "seafood market" intill Khao Lam Road. Även restaurang för den som inte
vill laga till maten själv. Kan säkert bli bra när allt är på plats. Snickarna jobbar (idag)
intensivt kunde jag konstatera
Med vänlig hälsning,
Ola

Will tourism in Thailand bounce back from Covid differently? ASEAN NOW

Keemala-eco-pods-Thailand-1580x543.jpg

Thailand will never lose its charm with fabulous beaches, temples, cultures, and mouthwatering food.

The lure of the land of smiles also attracts golfers, scuba divers, medical tourists, and of course holidaymakers after the crazy nightlife.

That said, it has been clear for all to see that currently during the pandemic life has not been all smiles.

It has been hard to get a drink in a restaurant, nightlife has been closed and everything shuts down at 11 pm.

Ok, these restrictions will eventually be lifted as the country beats the Covid curve, however, will everything be the same.

Nightlife will be back but differently?

Take the nightlife and the hospitality industry which was really hit during the pandemic.

Thousands of hotel staff and restaurant and bar staff lost their jobs, and will they return.

Many go-go bars shut up shop over two years ago with landlords owed massive unpaid rent.

Will enterprising entrepreneurs be willing to take the risk of re-opening, and will their landlords charge reasonable rents?

The bar girls headed back to their families long ago, and may have settled back into country life, so will they be tempted back?

With fewer European, American, and Aussie ex-pats traveling due to the global recession, will the expected Indians and Arabs be able to fill the void as customers?

Where will tourists go?

Bangkok will always exist as it is one of the great cities of the world, however, resorts like Pattaya and Phuket will have to alter their appeal to attract a new type of tourist.

Pattaya is perhaps in better shape in the long run, as it will inevitably benefit from the new high-speed rail links and the expansion of the Eastern corridor.

Already more emphasis is on family-orientated attractions including waterparks and shopping experiences are starting to change the city's seedier image.

Phuket still has a wonderful coastline and is the second-largest airport in the country, so it should bounce back too.

Massive competition

The TAT now has a huge job of attracting visitors who now have a wider choice when coming to SE Asia.

Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore are now all competing for these vacationers, so Thailand has to work even harder to attract the millions who used to spend time here in the past.

Medical tourism is extremely popular, as Thailand offers a cheaper alternative to many Western hospitals.

Some think with the relaxing of the Cannabis laws, people will be attracted to sit and get stoned on a cup of Cannabis tea!!

Eco back to nature resorts should also prosper, as the world adjusts to saving the planet.

The bottom line is if the Thai baht weakens, then foreigners will return if they get more for their currency.

However it will still be a few years without any more pandemics to get Thailand back on track, so let us hope the government and the country's hospitality industry can wait that long.

Swedish man warned against begging in Pattaya

A destitute Swede sitting in a wheelchair in front of Tuk Com in South Pattaya told police that he was marooned in Pattaya because of the pandemic and had no money for food and other necessities.

A Swedish beggar was warned to contact his embassy instead of panhandling in South Pattaya.

Teerasak Jatupong, head of city hall's Special Task Unit, took officers and Pattaya police to Tukcom on South Road March 25 after complaints about a foreign man in a wheelchair begging for money.

The unidentified Swedish man told authorities he was broke due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Police did not arrest the foreigner, but warned him begging is illegal and told him to go back to his condo. If he needed help, police told the man, he should contact his embassy, the Pattaya Police Station or other government agency.
